Dear all,

I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, filled with Joy and Good Health!

Even though Christmas started as a Christian tradition, Christmas slowly asserted itself as a global celebration and yet another good example of a tradition which now binds nations and religions together, regardless of location, ethnic identity, religion or spiritual beliefs. Some people say it became ”commerical”. I say the contrary - Christmas became global and now binds people together - which is true beauty and, even maybe, the way it was intended by the one whos birth we celebrate on Christmas day!

For this occasion, I would like to share with you a Christmas story which is maybe not so well known...
124 years ago, in the USA, a little 8 year old girl named Virginia was complaining to her Father that her school colleagues told her that there is no Santa Claus! Her Father, most likely in a difficult position, uttered the phrase which became ”kitch” in the USA:
”If you see it in The Sun, it's so." (The Sun - a newspaper in the USA at that time)....

Virginia did not want to give up the fight so easily... She wrote a simple letter with the vocabulary of an 8 year old to the Editorial Office of ”The Sun”.

DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

The answer she received, published in The Sun on the 21st of September 1897 by Francis Church, will remain inscribed in the Tome of History. You can read the answer here.

In the reply, you will find many commonalities with our present time... but one phrase which we need to bear in mind is:

”You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.”

So, yes, Santa Claus does exist in the end! Like any other good persona, in all the traditions of this planet from the East to the West, he is a symbol, a metaphor, an allegory for humanity and human good will. In our daily scientific work we tend to forget that some things do not need an objective measure (an ounce, a millimeter, a mg/kg, photons/second, etc.). Some things cannot be measured with our minds, but only with our ”human” sense and morality... Let us not forget that we are not machines, we are humans. And as humans, we do not function on mechanisms, but on reason and empathy.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and may the New Year be as you want it to be!

Best wishes,
Cristian
